I have been using Ubuntu exclusively for my work machine (Debian for
the play machine). The Etch version is currently the beta release
(official version should be out very soon) but works extremely well.

Evolution is the emailer that is installed as part of the official
installation, but I have always found it to be overblown. I use
Sylpheed which is small and fast and I have never had any problem with
it. It also interfaces with bogofilter for reasonably good spam
filtering.

I think that if you want a good stable desktop machine then Ubuntu is a
very good choice.

Cheers,
Alan
