If you are new to Linux, don't use Debian. If you want a desktop
machine (which it appears that you do, then use Ubuntu. Ubuntu is
Debian with all of these problems solved for you (well, almost all).

Ubuntu already has the printer stuff that you need. Click, click and
you should be running.
