Anyone who wants to follow my adventures with the Brother HL-5250DL and
trying to install Postscript Type 1 fonts onto Debian 3.1 stable can
read more, starting at:
http://lists.freestandards.org/pipermail/printing-user-brother/2006/001297.html
Fonts seem to be a complete mess in this Linux setting. First there are
multiple font technologies, such as Type 1 and TrueType. Secondly there
are several ways fonts can be handled for display by XFree86. Then
there is Ghostscript, which handles printing. Furthermore, some
applications do their own font handling stuff. The documentation is
scattered and not synchronised with my particular system - and I figure
I am not being radical running Debian 3.1 stable.
http://www.pegasus.rutgers.edu/~elflord/font_howto/
is from 2002. An up-to-date HowTo is:
http://avi.alkalay.net/linux/docs/font-howto/Font.html
but it assumes the use of TrueType fonts with the FontConfig system,
which is not normally part of Debian 3.1 stable.
