Actually, both Mozilla and Thunderbird do retain their A4 and margin
settings after a reboot.  So now, apart from the pesky business of
having to select the bottom of 4 options when printing, all seems well.

For lost souls wondering about the problem of "defaulting to letter"
paper size, maybe these will help.  I don't think they were essential
for my success, but this can't be ruled out:

  lpadmin -p HL-5250DN -o media=A4

  lpoptions -l

  /etc/papersize

  dpkg-reconfigure libpaper1

Open Office, Gimp and Gedit default to A4.
