Sorry if this is off topic, perhaps the discussion can be moved to
unlink.

I've just been reading Tim Flannery's book "The Weather Makers" and
my reaction at the moment is "oh shit". Especially when he talks
about committed CO2 levels.

Actually it took me about 3 months to get past the first 2 chapters
for some reason but the pace of my reading picked up after that, sort
of like a positive feedback loop.

The horrifying thing is how far along we are in actual measured
climate change. There is some detail about the research basis for
climate change.

It really seems that some of the major environmental disasters and
wars in our time: the permanent drought in parts of Africa and the
forest burning in Indonesia, the blame for have both been attributed
to the people living there when they have both been the results of
radical climate change. The wars in the African region like the war
in Sudan is about lack of water and climate change, yet it is
presented by the media as a religious war. The forest burning in
Indonesia was presented as "naughty farmers burning off" but the real
problem was the extended drought.

The results of that climate change (caused by Europe and the US) are
very visible in Europe. People are flooding in from uninhabitable
parts of Africa.

The evidence of climate change is overwhelming and while oil is a big
problem, the major problem is coal.
