We are not dead, we just haven't reached stability and the way we are  
going there will be a very uncomfortable overshoot before things  
stabilise.

Eventually the birth rate will equal the death rate. Our choice will  
be to set the rate which can be high or low. We will also have a  
choice with finite resources as to how "rich" we want to be. Low  
population, rich; high population poor.
