The tram up to where I worked was regularly delayed in autumn by leaves
on the line. When wet, the leaves would cause the tram wheels to lose
traction on hills (I realise trains don't go up hills the way trams do).

The driver would get out with a little broom and a stick to clear the
way. The trams also had little sand boxes, and the driver could drop
sand on the tracks to help matters.

The tram company had these nippy little orange cars fitted with
compressed air nozzles that they would line up with the tracks; they
would zip along the tram tracks going "FSSST! FSSST!". Must have been a
really fun job.

Regards, K.
