In fact the provision of bread and circuses, ie bloody gladiatorial
games, coincided with the glory days of Rome.  The period of decline was
associated with the triumph of Christianity and a move away from such
stuff.  Causation?  No.  The real causes are just a lot more complex
than a morality play.
