Yes there was a mechanical one.  I have one my grandfather gave me, you 
can't wind it and it doesn't use batteries, you just shake it from side to 
side.

But the one I was mentioning above is Digital :)  Has a range of cool 
features too - if you are into watches!  I find a mobile phone and a PDA 
does pretty much everything including both telling a different time!
