There is an industry in supplying low voltage lights and appliances
for off grid homes. Have a look at the "12 Volt Shop", who also sell
24V appliances <http://www.12volt.com.au/>.
But keep in mind that low voltage does not necessarily equal low
energy use. A low voltage 50 Watt light use the same amount of power
as a 240 Volt one: 50 Watts.

You might consider 42V as this is the standard adopted for new
vehicle systems <http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/1998/cars-1007.html>.
It was selected as it is about the highest safe voltage.
Power-Over-Ethernet uses 48 volts DC
