Thinking and being awake and especially being physically active, use
a lot of energy so when we sleep the body can devote a lot of energy
to the immune system and other healing activities. In sports
medicine it's well known that if you are ill, a great deal of your
daily energy quota is devoted to your immune system and other healing
tasks and you don't have so much for being active, in the worst cases
maybe none at all.

The brain does not stop in sleep. During a coma or an operation with
a general anaesthetic the brain is still (sometimes) listening to
what is being said around it.
