May have some interest to linkers who may have known him:

Death of Richard Newton
Richard Newton, professor and dean of the College of Engineering at
the University of California, Berkeley, a pioneer in electronic
design automation and integrated circuit design, and a visionary
leader in the technology industry, has died at the age of 55 after a
short illness. Born in Melbourne and educated at the University of
Melbourne, Richard was recruited to Berkeley in 1975. His involvement
with Australia continued in his role as a founding member of NICTA's
Scientific Advisory Group. Our sympathy to his family and colleagues
at the loss of such a great man. www.coe.berkeley.edu/newsroom/newton
