Voters should vote in their own long term self-interest. The problem is
working out what that is - particularly in the face of glass beads and
carrots. In the end we vote for the politician/leaders who we believe
most closely shares our values and interests, often in agreement with
others who we trust. [Ofcourse this is why politicians get tetchy with
the clergy]
On education for example, now that the baby bonus has produced a whole
lot of children...their education becomes a big issue.
Whether Climate change is real or not, if everyone in the workforce gets
into one car each - then we would never get to work. So, public
transport is important.
On Healthcare, my own view, is that we need to focus more on community
wellbeing rather than acute medical care. But if you have population who
you can frighten about getting sick, then the promise of medical
research to cure any possible ailments engages their attention.
Then there is the fraught issue of Debt, Interest rates and mortgages -
if you loose your source of income/can't service the debt you're stuffed!
With Broadband, I am not sure what the criteria are - but ofcourse it
doesn't hurt if you can get the government to empty its extremely full
coffers in your direction. On the other hand, why shouldn't individuals
in the "bush" and the city be able to access the www, listen to the
radio and watch TV. We just have to figure out the best way to do this.
