i have some friends in Phoenix, and they tell me this doesn't come close
to describing the awfulness of Sheriff Joe and his shenanigans.

the "armoured personnel carrier" in the story is just the journalist
downplaying the story to make it believable, it's actually a main battle
tank, with the gun turned into a battering ram.

this guy built a big swat team, got criticised, particularly from within
the team, who thought it ridiculous they were being used for trivia; 
Joe doesn't like criticism, so he sacked them all, THEN claimed the
Homeland Security bonus for having a swat team, which he didn't
anymore.   this threatened to become a scandal he might not survive, so
he started another swat team, with newbies; hence the botched attack.

Joe likes to ride around town looking tough, and defending "family
values", and most people just think they're voting for a conservative
sheriff who is tough on crime, which is how he likes it.   but the
stench is getting worse, and it is uncertain whether he can win the next
election.

last election he publicly slandered the alternative, a sane man with a
long and decorated career in law enforcement and military service, and
even so it was a close run thing, but old Joe got up again.

he's getting fairly ancient now, so Jesus might get him soon.
