To return the pedantry, how can you "hear" something being spelt ... and
isn't that "spelled" ?
To answer your pedantry question: Yes it is. Both spellings are acceptable.
I'm from West Australia, so maybe there's a dialectic difference ...
like how you South-Eastern-staters sometimes say Dahance, instead of Dance
and then Cassl instead of Cahsall.
