an even more horrible prospect would be Howard retaining his seat.

i don't like Costello, but i'd MUCH rather have had him as PM for the
last 11 years than Howard.  Howard's an evil self-serving opportunist
with no principles.  Costello's just a gutless yes-man...at least under
Howard that's what he is. by himself, he would probably be just an
old-school Liberal rather than the radical extremist that Howard is.

i.e. without the influence of Howard he probably wouldn't be much worse
than Rudd.


i suspect if we had had Costello for PM, we wouldn't have had children
overboard, or said "yes master" when the US wanted us to go to iraq,
and probably wouldn't have had the obscene so-called "anti-terror" but
really thought-crime/anti-dissent laws. we'd probably have still had the
AWB scandal
