Provided, that is, that the recipients of email or their systems
administrators don't then whinge (again!) about the "waste" of bandwidth
because of the "useless" images.

I think it's hilarious how the "HTML email is evil" meme gits thrashed to
death every time a topic comes even close to mentioning it. It's one of the
hot buttons. Sure, there are many problems with the way richly-formatted
email has been implemented on the intertubes.

Web bugs are one of them, so I'm not having a go at usually-sensible Howard.

The funny part is that all the participants obviously *know* these issues
have been "debated" endlessly. But, with hyperlinks and the Internet at
their fingertips, they don't use the power of this much-loved technology and
link back. There is instead some obviously deeply-psychological need to Have
One's Say. Again.

I wonder how that works...
