I use html formatting with two protections:

incoming/outgoing mail antivirus checking
incoming has html executables disallowed
I use Eudora 7.0x, the last release

I don't know if that's enough or not, but that's what I do.

BTW, Brenda's comment about Mozilla 'dropping' Thunderbird reminded 
me. Eudora's being redeveloped in something to do with Thunderbird.
