Comment from other lists suggest that it's nothing more than the  
option of offering the ability to surf porn without being traced by  
other users of the computer. Even the moniker, 'InPrivate', is  
suggestive of this. The ability to browse privately is touted as being  
a defender of privacy and offering 'better security', but most people  
appear to see it otherwise, and for nefarious purposes.

Incidentally, Safari blocks webpage history, items are removed  
automatically from the Downloads window, information isn't saved in  
AutoFill, cookies are not saved, searches are not added to the pop-up  
menu in the Google search box. None of this is configurable by turning  
on 'Private browsing', but each of these features can be turned off or  
on independently, with a degree of awkwardness. It works differently  
to IE8, which is more configurable:
