Since Apple completely controls their Intel hardware profile, couldn't
they add software that checks that profile and reject clones? A clone
would have to be 100% exactly the same as (one of the) the Apple Intel
hardware profiles to pass muster.

Addressing the matter at hand, I recall that Microsoft included similar
conditions in its Office Suite of products to the effect that that the
software can only be run on the Microsoft Windows operating system.
This to the chagrin of those emulating the OS itelf. You are technically
not allowed to run Office (and probably a whole suite of programs) on
emulators such as Wine.
