After his talk I had a brief meeting with P. Anandan at 
<http://nicta.com.au/>National ICT Australia's (NICTA)new 
headquarters in Canberra. I asked him what the future of broadband 
might be. He suggested that

technology which might provide a way to connect rural users in places 
such as India.

The previous Australian government arranged for the Optus/ Elders 
OPEL venture to include WiMax in its regional data network
