I have a RealAudio lecture and accompanying set of slides (HTML) by Roger Penrose on this topic. From memory, he proposed quantum-computing effects in the micro-tubules which form part of the synapses, but he did make clear this was a speculation. And I don't think his ideas don't have a big following among the experts.
However trying to open the audio file, originally downloaded in October 2005, now pops up "The content you are trying to play uses an audio codec that is obsolete and no longer supported. Please contact the content provider about using a supported codec." Maybe I'll have to crank up MS Windows98-SE again to play it!
