I think you missed the main point.

The man's VR character divorced the woman's VR character so the woman's RL 
person hacked the man's RL computer and deleted the man's VR character.

If the woman's VR character had murdered the man's VR character then nothing 
happened.

If the woman's RL person had murdered the man's RL person, then it is a 
serious crime.

When the woman's RL person hacks the man's RL computer, it is a crime. Calling 
it the murder of the man's VR character just turns it into a media story.
