I had a whack at loading this widget into a plain old HTML file.

It does work fine. To do the same, you need to copy and paste
the widget code into a file and load that file into your browser.
Interestingly, it didn't work well in Safari, but Firefox was fine.

The widget is what I would term properly constructed. It has both a
Javascript and non-JS variant in the same source file. It works
fine with or without JS.
