As an ex-Sydney expat I read the SMH occasionally to keep a finger on
the 'Sydney pulse', but I certainly wouldn't be paying for it.
abc.net.au, crikey (free edition),The Monthly's online edition or even
starobserver.com.au (Let's face it, Sydney is still a pretty gay city)
would provide all I need, allbeit in a slightly more fragmented form.
Ross Gittins, yep I'd miss his stuff. Miranda Devine? Hmm...
When I first moved to Sydney in the early 80s the SMH was a crappy,
uninspiring, paper. It got better for a bit. I suspect some of these
proprietors have an overinflated idea of their publications' position
as an 'institution' in their city. Make the wrong move, Fairfax, and
you'll be last week's bird cage liner.
