The farce continued to the very end.
The SMH reports:
http://www.smh.com.au/national/shock-result-as-abbott-wins-liberal-leadership-by-one-vote--ets-dead-20091201-k1uz.html?autostart=1
"Fran Bailey was absent from the vote due to a medical condition.
"A spokesman for the Victorian backbencher said she tried to obtain a
proxy vote, but party rules prevented that. ...
"Ms Bailey's spokesman wouldn't comment on whether she would have
voted for Mr Turnbull, but she has been considered a supporter of the
former leader in the past."
If the vote had been tied 42-42, you'd imagine the incumbent stayed.
But, no, there had already been a spill, so Turnbull was no longer leader.
I wonder if the incompetence of the Party in designing its
Constitution extends to being unable to cope with a tied vote for the
leadership after a spill vote has been previously carried.
