I think this is an excellent summary of this debacle:

Unfortunately the negative repercussions will now extend directly to
the global effort to control greenhouse gas emissions.

One vote in the party room could have avoided this - including a
proxy vote from Fran Bailey who couldn't attend, or a valid vote from
the MP whose voted informally.
