Actually Jim Gray and Tony Hey (the key people referenced in the article) know this perfectly well.  They are talking about structured data residing in tables with defined and stable column and row descriptors.  It is just that CERN for example is going to spit out rather a lot of such data in the near future.  These are real players in the research community dealing with real issues.
