If you want to see a well implemented electronic ticketing system, go to
Istanbul and try their "Akbil" on trains, trams, ferries, buses and even
funiculars: <http://www.tomw.net.au/travel/istanbul.shtml>.

The Istanbul system using contact based 1-Wire (iButton) smart chip in a
small metal can: <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1-Wire>.

This is primitive technology compared to the Sydney and Melbourne smart
cards, but unlike them the Istanbul system actually works.

The Victorian system is still doing better than the NSW "Tcard" system,
which has been abandoned, with the matter now in court:

Perhaps the Federal Government should bale both the NSW and Victorian
Governments out by creating a national standard smart ticket and
driver's licence. The idea would be that your drivers licence would come
with some public transport credit on it, to encourage to leave the car
at home.

ps: Yes, that is a photo of my thumb on the Wikipedia page about
Istanbul public transport:
