Could you not change over sometime today, when presumably traffic will
be lower, so you can madly make corrections on broken things before

It will be based on your current crawl rate, but if the redirects are
working, it will be fine.

No. You'll have to hassle them.
Your logs (if you have decent hosting) will tell you who are the most
important to hassle :)
