Yeah - I believe that's how it works. You'd be driving along with the
radio off, and an announcement would come on as you approached a
particular road about, say, an accident. My host told me that it's also
used for emergencies. It was most impressive.

The volume of the announcements seemed consistent. I assume that it was
independant of the radio's volume control (i.e. that you couldn't
silence it). I'll ask my pommie host for info.

If we were listening to the radio or a CD at the time, the announcement
would override it, i.e. the tuned station or CD would blank while the
announcement was made.

His car, btw, was maybe 5 years old and he hadn't replaced the radio.
