A Californian man is to be charged with making child pornography with
a 15-year-old Australian girl.

The grand jury indictment says 30-year-old Troy Nelson exchanged
graphic images online with the girl. Prosecutors say he then went to
Queensland late last year to live with the girl, who had turned 16.

They were engaged with her parents' permission.

The age of consent in Queensland is 16.

Nelson was arrested when he returned to the US on March 2 and could
face 40 years in prison if convicted of the sexual exploitation of a child.

This is just weird.

I have a friend in the US who was caught up in something equally
bizarre. He was conversing on the net with a person in the northeast
US. I don't recall what age she said she was, but when he got there
for a face to face, it turned out she wasn't 16 I don't think. Her
parents had him arrested, he was charged and found guilty. He didn't
have to go to jail, but he lost his job. It was awful. This guy was
one of the nicest, mild mannered people I ever knew. Was he a perv? I
would have no way to know because I didn't live with him. I did
socialise with him, though, and quite liked him. This happened after
I moved here, so maybe he had changed, but I doubt it.

Things are not always what they seem on the surface, and I doubt very
much if we'll ever know the real facts of my friend's situation or
this guy from California. Troy would have been better off to stay in
Qld if he could have. But I'll bet there was a visa limitation that
required him to go back. It would be interesting to know how the US
authorities discovered what he had done. If he had a collection of
images of lots of different people, he should be put in the clink.
I'm not so sure about the situation if it's just this one person.
