So he was 30, she was 15-16?

Presuming they did actually engage in a "sexual act" whilst in Queensland
(the article doesn't specifically say that they did) then even if you ignore
the CP issues, this would most likely be illegal under US law.  He has
traveled internationally with the intent of having sex with a minor
significantly younger than he is. Regardless of what the legal age of
consent is in the country he travelled to, that it illegal under US law.

Australia has similar laws.
