A simple test: cease and desist with ALL network traffic for a long period.
Monitor your border router for traffic. That at least would indicate if you
have been zombied.

I suspect though that you suspect that your probs are at the hands of the
operating system supplier. Could easily be the case, since you have no idea
what is inside an upgrade. And it squares nicely with our most heartfelt
opinions of the operating system provider.
