A single source of identification/authorisation for researchers in multiple universities/research institutions in multiple countries is never going to happen. Hence work on federated identity management. Australian work on this issue has been funded through the Australian Access Federation http://project.aaf.edu.au/

A while back we did some research on a Learner Identity Management Framework (to which Roger was a major contributor). Thanks Evan,
I didn't want to mention AAF (in the hope someone else would!)

I have been instrumental as the technical lead in getting <some_uni>
to finally join the AAF as production IDP etc ;)

I am also currently involved in an Identity Management project
here as we try to cast our net and gather identities together
and find out who is who....

At <some_uni>, there is talk of "clouds" and a number of projects
will soon arise that will require some of the above eg shibbolising
cloud based apps and so on ;)

Cheers....
