I received a new Commonwealth Mastercard in November and was
surprised to see it has the PayPass facility - short-range
contactless RFID-like communication for transactions up to a certain
value (AUD$35).

The card came with a letter to this effect, and has the word:

  paypass

on the front.

I haven't used it like this - o noticed any PayPass readers in shops.
I understand they are common in the USA.

>From my brief research in November, I recall that other types of card
have different technical arrangements for doing much the same thing.
