My ageing Eee boots in under 30 seconds. My home wireless network is
connected within seconds of booting. I'll go along with software bloat,
but there are good office apps that are relatively small. Even so, OOo
is perfectly usable on my Eee, even if it does take 30 seconds to load
the WP.
I have no problems doing photo manipulation - resizing 5MB to 100KB,
colour correction, cropping, redeye elimination, etc. - and the speed's
perfectly acceptable. I get ~5 hours from the battery even watching
movies (which display perfectly). Not great, but perfectly usable.
The problems you cite seem to be related to software and setup, not the
device. Even a supercharged V8 will seem lame if you try to make it pull
a road train.
