Absolutely there are laws! The Collection principle in our Privacy Act
and like privacy laws around the world says a company must not collect
personal information unless it is needed for a defined business purpose
(and without telling individuals about the collection). And the Use &
Disclosure principles say a company must not use personal information
collected for one purpose for unrelated seconday purposes, nor disclose
collected information to others, without consent. It's black letter law.
