Using Safari on a Mac, I cannot see where I can place comments either, even alongside articles that have comments (and without the usual 'comments closed' indicator).

However, if I switch from Safari (with AdBlocker) to Firefox (with no plugins), I can now see the 'Would you like to comment' box with 'Sign up for a free account'. The resultant source code displayed for both the Safari and Firefox output is identical.

At first blush I'd have mused that a cookie in Safari might think I'm signed in. But even after removing all smh cookies, still no panel.

Delving deeper, there is a javascript that allows for the commenting form to be displayed: and javascripting needs to be on to permit the commenting feature to work.

Delving deeper still, Adblocker is the culprit for me: If I disable it, I can sign up or login and see the comments panel.

Didn't think that the iPad would have Adblocker capabilities, though.

Have you tried http://www.smh.com.au/contacts/readerlink/ to make a comment?
