[LINK] Shirky: Murdoch's Times paywall is pretty much like all the other paywalls

It's interesting that Murdoch gets bagged for putting The Times and Sunday Times

behind a paywall, yet Fairfax did it some time ago for the AFR.

But what seems interesting about paywalls such as Times/Sunday Times/AFR is that

from my reading/recollction newspaper sales go down when the online version goes

completely behind a paywall.

The AFR's sales have been on a downwards spiral in recent years and could it be
a case of out of sight out of mind when newspapers are completely behind a
paywall.

Next cab off the rank with a version of a paywall appears to be the New York
Times, I believe sometime in 2011.

David
