hi roger,

the uk is trying to raise enough money to build Babbage's analytical
engine. the rebuilt difference engine is now on show in the uk
science museum. our own alan bromley helped build that.

the people setting this scheme up have advised that they have several
large pledges so nearly have all the funds. see em below. they still
need a few more 10 uk pounds pledges.

the objectives of the scheme are below. please would you circulate
this on link.

1. To help digitize and make available in electronic form all of
Charles Babbage's notes and plans associated with the Difference
Engine and Analytical Engine.

2. To fund the study of Babbage's Analytical Engine plans to
determine what best constitutes a complete design for the Engine.

3. To coordinate the building of a computer simulation of the
Analytical Engine that shows its working in 3D with accurate physics.

4. To build the Analytical Engine and donate it to a museum in Great
Britain for public display.

peace

Subject: Changing the number of pledges needed

      Dear supporters and Babbage fanatics,

Thank you very much for your pledge to fund the Plan28.org and
the project to build Babbage's Analytical Engine.

Since creating the page on PledgeBank where you signed up, I've
received a large number of private pledges of money, support,
and services independently of this PledgeBank, so I've asked
PledgeBank if I can lower the target number of signers from
50,000 down to 10,000. This means that the project is more
likely to go ahead as these private pledges mean that I am
unlikely to need the £500,000 from public donations that I
originally envisaged. If I can now raise only £100,000 (i.e.
£10 from 10,000 people) there will be enough money to get
      started on the project.

As I am effectively changing the terms of what you signed up
for, you of course have the right to withdraw your pledge at
this point if you want to. In that case, just email
<mailto:team at pledgebank.com>team at pledgebank.com and ask to be removed.

Thanks to everyone for your support! It's fantastic to see the
thousands of names and the many, many comments.

      John.
