I installed Google maps on my mobile phone recently. During the
installation it asked if the app could sent location information back to
Google. I said yes. This is a WiFi but no-GPS phone but it did a
pretty good job of working out where I was. I think this is from GPS
towers and scanning wifi network IDs but I don't know. I guess this is
why Google snooped their WiFi database.
It was brilliant for driving around the suburbs of a city I knew
minimally (Brisbane) except my phone screen was a bit small and I
couldn't get Google Maps to speak to me while driving - so I want a
bigger smarter phone now.
