Steven - Telstra has come out on Twitter and said they don't use it, and
don't track anything people do except for billing purposes.
My opinion is that it's a case of big-brains getting carried away ...
"Hey, guys, you know we could also do this! And then we could analyse it
and sell the analysis to advertisers! What about SMS, couldn't we do
that as well?"
I would think that any Australian carrier will have got the 'don't touch
it with a pole' message from their lawyers.
I would note as an aside that lawyers with genuine expertise in the
matter of interception frequently don't respond to queries from
journalists...
