I don't know where you are, Fernando because you
have a gmail address. I'm assuming not in the US.
Budget cuts are because the income from people
using the post office services in small towns has
reduced. Don't confuse use of postal service with post office.
What folks in Australia need to know to
understand this is that one does not have to go
to a post box or a post office to send a letter.
You leave it at your letter box and the mailman
(in US English) takes the item away with them,
unlike here. The US also still had Saturday
delivery, unlike here. That is another area under
discussion to stop in order to reduce costs.
Parcel post may be cheaper to handle without a
post office as well, either by contract or even
running the trucks themselves. The one thing that
would be a hassle is when someone's not home to
sign for items that require it. Post boxes are
also still a major service in the US, and
necessary in some circumstances. There are stores
and such that can do that service without a full function post office.
