That is how education has been operating for thousands of years, apart
from the bit about "teachers make a lot of money". ;-)
For vocational and higher education, the main requirement for a teacher
is to know your subject.
I wandered into the ANU one day, they gave me an office, someone said
"do you know anything about ... ?" and the next thing I knew I was
teaching it. Only ten years later am I giving in to the increased
pressure being applied to get teaching credentials:

ps: There is an increase in teaching standards as a by product of the
use of e-learning. If what you teach is online, it is a lot easier for
your peers, and external auditors, to check what you do. Your work is an
open e-book.
