Disruptive Education... Crowd Sourced Teaching...

Quote/
SkillShare makes everyone a teacher
Date Founded: April 2011

Founders: Michael Karnjanaprakorn, Malcolm Ong

Concept: Crowdsourced teaching (and the teachers make a lot of money).
Anyone can teach a class in anything they're an expert on. All they have
to do is find a venue, decide how much to charge "students," and share
their knowledge for one evening. Lessons live online too.

Location: New York, NY

Funding: $550,000; Founder Collective, SV Angel, Collaborative Fund,
David Tisch, Scott Heiferman.

Why You Should Care: Everyone from P Diddy's personal chef to Chris
Dixon have been using SkillShare to teach people their skills. It's
great for sharing expertise and it makes the teachers a lot of pocket
change. Teachers decide what to charge, from nothing to hundreds of
dollars for tickets to their class and receive 85%* of all tickets sold.

'It's a real business that is akin to AirBNB for education, with a great
revenue opportunity," says a top New York entrepreneur.

*Eventually, SkillShare will take 25% of all tickets sold.
