main issue has been not a particular technology but the ultimate scaling
issues - reaching one atom wide pathways, transistors. It's likely that
we will find ways around it, be it perhaps 3D chips, photonics,
something biological, or even just multiple chips - parallel
processing...
I've got a massively parallel computer that can process over 1 Tbyte/sec
and runs on about 30 Watts. It could be used as the basis of a design
target. Size is quite compact. The design is an optimised trade-off
between energy usage and functional power for its primary tasks of
monitoring and control, real time image analysis, systems modelling, and
attracting females. I know for a fact that it could be improved
significantly, but it's still quite an impressive machine compared to
anything Harvey sells.
