I'd invert that. The list community "owns" and makes what the list might be. Those who look after the parameters of the list or who chide grumpy list members when they cause offence are servants of the community. If those who own the infrastructure on which the list is run (and ANU has always been supportive) become nervous then the community can always move elsewhere.

We linkers are a community. We decide how we are supported and the rules that might apply and how lightly they are applied.
