New fibre-optic Asia link to raise internet speed

A NEW super-fast fibre-optic cable linking Australia to south-east Asia
will open within two years and will be 10 times faster than existing
undersea cables, according to the new Leighton subsidiary Australia-
Singapore Cable.
The link could lower costs and increase download speeds for Australian
internet users as it will give wholesale providers an alternative route
overseas - other than two ageing cables already running along the route.
Competition in overseas data carriage is already strong on the eastern
seaboard.
ASC's cable will run from Perth over Indonesia's Sunda Strait to
Singapore. Construction is due to start early next year and the cable is
expected to be operating in 2013.
Alcatel-Lucent won a tender to construct and install the cable, which will
be able to carry data at 16 terabits a second, or 6400 gigabits a second,
compared with 480 gigabits a second on the existing cable built in 2000.
