I checked out the Australian Institure of Criminology. Their stats show crime figures started going down around the turn of the century for all types of crime apart from assault that still seems to be on the rise, or maybe is on the way down. To attribute this to the internet seems a bit farcical. See http://data.aic.gov.au/aic16/#view=victimsEstimatesPerHTDateLineView&selectedWafers=0&selectedColumns=0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11.
No doubt there is research analysing the fall in crime rates on their website for anyone with the time to dig.
